Aim: This study is designed to focus on the lifestyles, occupations, and livelihood strategies of elderly individuals living in rural areas.Method: In the study, in-depth interviews were conducted with forty-one individuals aged 65 and above from various rural areas in Muğla province (Akçaova, Doğanlar, Fevziye, Esençay, Korucuk, Köklük, Menteş, Okçular, Turgut, Türbe, Yeşilyurt).
The data obtained from the interviews were categorized under themes such as daily life in rural areas, livelihood strategies, and attitudes towards life; subjected to thematic analysis, and interpreted with field notes.Results: The most significant finding of the study is that elderly individuals living in rural areas are increasingly struggling to meet their needs due to current economic conditions, and therefore, the support of children and family is crucial for the elderly.
The study also found that the migration of young people from rural areas negatively affects the lives of elderly individuals in various ways.Conclusion: To ensure that elderly individuals living in rural areas can continue their lives, especially by aging healthily, it is essential to make proper investments in infrastructure and superstructure, as well as to activate social support mechanisms.
